Study of Differentiations of Mental Math Techniques
Abstract
This project is a small study of differentiations of the two mental math techniques – Abacus and vedic math. This study gives a basic informations of each techniques, their related parameters, major differences, similiarities etc…also various reviews and opinions of different persons who have said and experienced by these two distinct tecniques.
Introduction
Mathematics is a topic that most of us find tough Calculations & number games are inseparable aspects of our daily life. Solving issues using standard mathematical processes can be difficult and time consuming at times .for Some children to conquer math, two alternative anicient approaches are now available . students may accomplish huge complicated calculations in their heads using one of these techniques without the use of any current technology .
The first technique Abacus is considered to be an effective tool for learning mental math techniques to solve simple to complex arithmetic calculations. Abacus calculation relies upon the manipulation of beads rather than the arithmetic processes. Therefore, it can be considered as just another method to solve math problems. Vedic maths and abacus are mental maths systems, both designed for different age groups with the common aim to make mathematics calculations easier for children. Abacus is usually referred to students in the age group of 6-12 years while Vedic math concepts can be well taught to students above the age of 13.
Relevance of the topic
Vedic Math, an ancient Indian method, sidesteps traditional computations in a manner that provides a shortcut, while being fun to use and to lean. With the dawn of the Digital Age and the era of computers, the Vedic Math Calculation Algorithms have come to the forefront in solving technology related issues. Students develop problem solving ability and it also leads to the development of creative intelligence. Students of Vedic Mathematics can not only do simple calculations of subtraction, addition, multiplication but also very complex calculations such as algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry. Experts of Vedic Maths and the course curator at Vedantu said that the decision to introduce Vedic maths in the V-Nuture programme was taken after conducting market research and assessing the demand for the programme. Vedic Maths works on 16 word Formula which solves all known mathematical problems in the branches of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus. It helps do mental calculations much faster. Therefore, not just school children but even students appearing for entrance exams like JEE and other competitive exams take up Vedic maths lessons,”

Abacus
Abacus is primarily the a brain development program.
Abacus is a rectangular tool with beads in it used for the purpose of counting and calculations. The tool has been used for a long time to help children understand maths. It has been used at abacus centers, in schools especially at early ages of child in KG, Grade 1 and Grade 2. Each bead represents numbers and uses place value concept for higher numbers. There is a horizontal bar in the rectangular tool. In the initial years the child learns maths with the help of this tool and later the child is able to do the same mentally by visualizing abacus in the mind. The abacus program helps the child to increase to speed and accuracy in math calculations. It develops left and right side of the brain and is also called brain development program. Most of the abacus programs have 2.5- 3 years of duration where in the child learns to calculate faster in maths operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Vedic Maths
Vedic Maths is a math program that helps to develop maths speed and accuracy. It has a lot of shortcut tricks and techniques for faster calculation called Vedic Sutras. These methods are easy to pick up. Vedic Maths as a concept finds its roots in India. Shri Bharti Krishna Tirathji is called the father of Vedic Maths who had conceived all the Vedic Sutras in his book. Children from 8 years of age can start learning Vedic maths. Vedic Sutras are the speed building methods, and they are used for faster calculations, in addition, subtraction, multiplications, division, squares, cubes, square roots, cube roots, HCF, LCM, and other higher calculations. Many of the schools have also started to adopt it in their math clubs, small exercises in maths books, and as an after-school math program. However, for a thorough study, it requires 8-12 months to be proficient in Vedic Maths
Sno | Parameter | Abacus | Vedic Maths |
1 | Meaning | Tool used for calculation | A Learning methodology having Vedic Sutras also called as short cut tricks and techniques in maths. |
2 | How it Helps | It helps in faster calculation | It helps in faster calculation |
3 | Usage of Tool | Requires tool in the intial period | Does not require any tool |
4 | Application in School Maths | Since in the initial year, the child is dependent on tool, so children can have difficulty in application at school. At a later stage, when child is able to do calculation mentally, the application is more useful in school maths | Since it does not require any tool, the application of vedic maths in calculations at school or beyond is easy . The child can apply the concepts learnt immediately in school maths. |

The abacus is an ancient tool invented during Greek and Roman times. Over the period abacus has evolved into different types as it traveled across the world. However it was in China the abacus was innovated further and used heavily in day-to-day life for calculations. Abacus math is a technique derived from this very old technique and fits right into the modern day world. Abacus use can build confidence, provide a sense of achievement, promote intuitive thinking, enhance problem-solving capability, stimulate creativity and improve concentration and mental endurance.Vedic Mathematics has no legal definition. Hindu philosophy is based on Veda-s (ancient scriptures written in Sanskrit, some say as old as 5000 B.C.) and mathematics translated from these texts is termed as Vedic Mathematics. These ancient scriptures were rediscovered by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960) and he translated the complex text into simpler understandable mathematics.
The system is based on 16 Vedic sutras or aphorisms, which are actually word-formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of mathematical problems. Some examples of sutras are "By one more than the one before", "All from 9 & the last from 10", and "Vertically & Crosswise". These 16 one-line formulae originally written in Sanskrit, which can be easily memorized, enables one to solve long mathematical problems quickly. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution.
With Abacus math, abacus is used as a tool to learn calculations. Beads are moved up and down and various columns to represent the number. When children use both hands to move the abacus beads to perform arithmetic calculations, there is quick communication between the hands and the brain that stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This promotes rapid, balanced whole brain development. Abacus math should be started at very early childhood, as young as age 4. Abacus math starts at very basic level by teaching the numbers and then progressing to calculations. Eventually the child retains the memory of bead positions and the relevant notation. Abacus math if started during later ages can create a bit of hindrance.
Vedic math is entirely done in mind. Vedic math also starts at a basic level of numbers and gradually progressing to simple additions, subtractions, multiplications and division. Vedic math goes much more beyond just the basic calculations. With Vedic math one can also solve complex geometrical theorems and algebraic problems. Vedic math can be started at later ages as well without any difficulty.

Conclusion
Both abacus and vedic maths helps to build maths speed and accuracy, however it has been observed children are able to do pickup easily with vedic maths as it does not require any tool. It can be easily done 8-12 months of time whereas in abacus the same calculation and its speed require 2-3 years. Since abacus is based on the tool in the initial 8-12 months and carrying the tool to the school for child is generally not allowed in the maths class, hence Vedic Maths comes with more advantages. Moreover, the application of Vedic Maths has a wide spectrum and not just limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Vedic Maths has speed building methods on squares, cubes, square roots , cube roots, HCF, LCM and other higher calculations which are also easy to pick up for kids.
